Jute instead of plastic - the slogan is more relevant than ever. Farmers in Bangladesh make handicrafts that could help changing the world. Bangladesh is the second largest producer of jute after India. Its shimmering colour and formerly high price earned the plant the name "golden fibre". Jute was used to make fabrics for the world. But as demand fell, the once coveted fibre lost its lustre. That could change with an invention. A scientist from the capital , Dr. Mubarak Ahmad Khan, found a way to process the "golden fibre" into cheap biodegradable cellulose sheets. May it soon be possible to produce environmentally friendly bags for daily use that are made of jute, feel and look like plastic? The film follows the life of jute farmers in Northern Bangladesh at a time when they are faced with completely new challenges.
